Tall Sasha Exclusive Interview

TS_RubySkye

Today we have the great pleasure of bringing you an exclusive interview from Tall Sasha, an accomplished and rising DJ and producer operating out of San Francisco, California. In addition to our interview we have one of his latest mashups, along with a free download.

FPTW: “Why don’t you tell me about yourself? Where you’re from, what you like to do, and anything else you’d like the world to know.”

Sasha: “I was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and moved to the USA when I was a teenager. I had two passions in my life, sports and music. I tried to combine both, but it was hard so I had to pick one over the other. I played basketball in high school which led to a scholarship to attend Orange Coast college and San Francisco State. Music was still a strong part of my identity, but sports was top priority because it was paying for college. After finishing college and getting a master’s in marketing, I felt like it was time to get back to what I love most, playing and sharing music with the world.”

FPTW: “When did you start DJing and what does your personal setup consist of?”

Sasha: “I got into DJing several years ago, I taught myself to spin with turntables and eventually I switched over to Pioneer CDJs, which I still use.”

FPTW: “What about producing? When did you start and what’s that setup like?”

Sasha: “I started to produce professionally about one year ago. I’ve been using Logic software for a while, and I’ve been making remixes/edits/bootlegs but I never posted it. Then I started getting messages on facebook and email from other DJs asking me where I found that track, so I would just reply and say that I made it. Of course I was willing to share it, so I kept posting it on my soundcloud page and got a lot of nice responses from fellow DJs and bloggers.”

FPTW: “Describe the time you felt like you had your first big break.”

Sasha: In terms of DJing, becoming a regular opening DJ at Ruby Skye, one of the top 100 clubs in the world according to DJ magazine, really meant a lot to me. I got a chance to spin opening sets for amazing DJ’s like David Guetta, Avicii, Axwell, Ferry Corsten, Kaskade, and more.”

FPTW:  Wow, what is it like opening for those huge name DJs?”

Sasha: “It feels great to be on the same stage with world’s top names. A couple of times it has happened that they were running late; David Guetta was supposed to start at 12am at Ruby Skye, but he showed up around 1:30am, so I ended up playing a full house from for 4 hrs from 930-130. David Guetta came on stage and told me “Great job keeping the crowd entertained, and wonderful music selection.”  I responded by telling him, “I don’t mind [you] being late anytime like this, but crowd is ready for [you]!” “Also, opening for Axwell was really cool, I got a chance to talk to him a bit and I’ve asked him how he likes San Francisco, and we chatted a bit.”  ”When Avicii was in town and I did opening set for him at Ruby Skye, he asked me where I got couple of bootlegs that I played so that was really cool, we ended up taking pics on the stage with his finger pointing at me like “thumbs up!”

FPTW: “Who is your favorite artist and what is your favorite track right now?”

Sasha: “My favorite artist at the moment is Nicky Romero, his sound is really energetic, but there’s a fine balance of not going overboard. I feel lucky that I’ll be performing with him on May 12th at Ruby Skye. My favorite track at the moment is Kontiki by Hardwell and Dannic.”

FPTW: “Tell me about you best set.”

Sasha: “It was at Republiq Club in Manila, Philippines. The club had beautiful lights, lasers, 3D visuals, and a capacity of 2500. It was my first time in Manila, and supposedly I had lots of fans already, as some Philippino websites had posted my bootlegs. Apparently people were curious to see me spin live, I was supposed to do a two hour set from 12-2AM, but ended up playing until 4AM as people didn’t want to leave and the club just kept going and going.”

FPTW: “What’s on the horizon for you in the near future?”

Sasha: “I want to continue expanding my DJ school called DJ4Life, and since EDM music is taking over the world by storm, now is the time that I want to add a “Tall Sasha-style” of music production to the world. I’m working on several cool originals, remixes, and I’ve also got a collaboration with an artist who’s had top a top-40 hit in the US as well as multiple #1s in the UK and Europe. Watch out for my new stuff!”
